Counseling & Case Management

Neurodiverse individuals (those with High Functioning Autism, Asperger Syndrome, Non-Verbal Learning Disorders, Attention Deficit Disorders, or anxiety/mood disorders) face transitional, educational and career challenges different than any other group of individuals. Dealing with a hidden disability causes difficulties in all aspects of neurodiverse individuals' lives, both in the workplace and at home.

At EvoLibri, we want our clients to reach their personal life goals -- not just getting a job or getting a little post-secondary education. To that end, our intake process not only assesses where a client is, but identifies where the client wants to go -- and together we develop a realistic, workable, step-by-step plan to attain those goals. We also know that neurodiverse clients frequently have several areas that need to be addressed simultaneously -- anxiety or mood disturbances, vocational or career decisions, possibly post-secondary educational planning, ongoing social skills work, and training for independence.

Instead of offering just one piece of the puzzle, we take a multidisciplinary, holistic approach, providing case management, direct services and referrals to other professionals in the area to provide services such as psychological assessment, psychotherapy, neurofeedback, occupational therapy and sensory integration, speech pragmatics, and legal assistance.

In this way, EvoLibri is unique -- we see the whole individual -- and work with each client as a whole person trying to attain his or her own personal goals.

Individual services Include:

  • Assessment and Screening
    • Functional, Career/Vocational, Coping & Problem Solving, and Personality
    • Depression, Anxiety, ADD, and other co-existing issues
  • Case Management Services, including warm line consultation with family, periodic consultation with other service providers, and referral to outside services as needed
  • Career Exploration & Consultation, to help each individual choose a career or vocation that they are passionate about and can be successful at
  • Post-Secondary Educational Planning, including selection of an appropriate school and program, as well as residential services as needed
  • Personalized Job Skills Coaching, such as resume writing, interviewing techniques and role playing, job search instruction and lead generation, and coaching on job etiquette

Club Neuro

Neurodiverse individuals continue to face difficulties with social interactions, well into adulthood and often throughout their lives. Despite this fact, and despite the fact that research clearly shows that social interaction with peers is immensely useful, most schools and private providers only offer social skills and group counseling to children 12 and under. We have developed an ongoing social group called Club Neuro, which allows teens and young adults to have social interaction and fun! Click here for more information.

Independence Training

One of the things that neurodiverse teens need in order to be successful is independence training on the skills all adults must have in order to live alone. Yet, these skills are frequently not taught in high school or in private, and so, we are happy to fill that gap.

In Summer 2008, EvoLibri offered its first Independence Boot Camp, a two-week session covering eight topics: Cooking, Organization and Calendaring, Housing, Self-Care, Housekeeping, Home Maintenance, Personal Finances, and Social Life.

In Fall 2008, we will begin offering Saturday seminars covering one of these modules. Each seminar runs from 10 am until 7 pm, includes lecture and resource handouts, and includes lunch and dinner, which we will cook and eat together. Click here for the schedule.

Educational & Employment Advocacy

Many Neurodiverse individuals find that once past the hurdles of completing education and landing a competitive job, they face yet another unfamiliar, and sometimes unsympathetic, landscape. Employers simply lack an understanding of neurodiversity, what it means, and how it impacts employees, and frequently employee and employer get locked in battle, where the employer sees unhelpful behavior as wilfull disobedience, and the employee isn't able to change it.

When retained, EvoLibri can intervene on behalf of the employee, and if the hiring company agrees, can work directly with the employer to help the hiring manager and HR representatives understand the employee's unique situation. We can offer education on ADA laws, discuss appropriate and useful accommodations that can be made for this (and potentially other) employees, and in general move the discussion to a win-win, instead of a lose-lose.
